Eight questions to ask when purchasing piglet feed, farmers must know!

Price should not be the only criterion for measuring high-end piglet feed, as many ordinary products are often priced too high. Even in branded feed, there may be differences in product quality, and even product quality may vary from year to year.
1. How to handle grains
For the first type of feed used for piglets after weaning, the grains will undergo heat processing. In general, hot processing (cooking) makes grains easier to digest and more palatable. In addition, grains should be finely ground to improve their digestibility and promote growth. You can determine whether the grains are being treated excessively or poorly ground by the degree of blackening (burning) exhibited by the grains or the large particles in the feed (rough grinding).
2. Lactose level
Most feed manufacturers refuse to disclose the lactose level of feed because lactose is very expensive. And we all know that the feed intake of piglets depends on the lactose level in the feed. When it comes to lactose levels in feed, it is beneficial to have more, but excessive levels may cause piglets to become mentally lax because lactose is a laxative. The most suitable lactose level can maximize the feed intake of piglets without the risk of diarrhea.
3. How hard should the particles be
In fact, piglets prefer mixtures composed of different textures (powdered and granular, powdered and oatmeal, etc.). The real important issue when using granular materials is the hardness of the particles, because in simple terms, piglets cannot chew hard particles, so they will refuse to feed. Therefore, soft particles are a type favored by piglets. When squeezed tightly with two fingers, soft particles are prone to breakage. It is recommended to feed healthy piglets with pellet feed, starting from the first feed after weaning.
4. How much soy protein should be added to the diet
There are often too many and incorrect types of soybeans, and this is one of the main reasons why many piglet diets can cause piglet diarrhea. Ideally, soybean meal should be completely avoided, and only soy protein and puffed soybeans can be used in the first diet of piglets after weaning, and once again as part of the total protein composition of the diet. If piglets are weaned after 21 days of age and have already consumed the feed before weaning, some soybean meal can be added to the first diet of piglets after weaning.
5. Which animal protein was used
In this article, we mainly refer to fish meal, but other ingredients can also be used. As far as fish meal is concerned, adding up to 10% is an ideal level, but only referring to the so-called low-temperature fish meal (i.e. fish meal is slowly cooked to contain higher nutritional value), low-quality fish meal can actually make pigs refuse to eat.
6. What kind of immunoglobulin has been added
Firstly, you need to add immunoglobulin to the feed, whether it comes from plasma or eggs. The more, the better, as they can improve intestinal health, leading to maximum growth rate, in other words, higher feed intake (easily recognizable immunoglobulin addition effect). These products are expensive, very expensive, so we expect them to bring more revenue, but they are indeed creating miracles, especially in pig farms with production performance below average.
7. What kind of additive has been added
Excessive additives may indicate a lack of confidence in the feed ingredients used and a lack of knowledge on how to design successful piglet feed. Each additive should have its own purpose of use, and not every pig farm requires all additives.
8. What amount of food intake should we expect to achieve in the first week after weaning
The best feed manufacturer will inspect your pig farm and recommend using a piglet feed to maximize feed intake. However, giving specific numbers is a form of gambling. However, a range should be given, for example: my feed can always make the daily feed intake of piglets exceed 150g (feed intake in the first week after weaning, weaned at 21 days old), and the best feed intake we can achieve is 300g per day (also feed intake in the first week after weaning, weaned at 18 days old).
